The Poo Millionaire
Envy is a light comedy film starred by Ben Stiller and Jack Black, two comedy actors who need little introduction.
While you are sure to be entertained by the plots of the story and the funny characters of these two men, the movie itself is full of life lessons. In fact, in many ways, you may see part of you in some of the characters.
Tim (Stiller) and Nick (Black) were colleagues and best friends who lived in the same neighborhood, with their houses opposite of each other. Both were married with kids. They also worked in the same company, 3M that manufactured sand papers and they car pooled to their factory together every day. While the two and their families did a lot of common things together, their thinking were of the opposite.
Tim was a straight thinker and was somewhat contended with his job as a factory worker, a husband and a father. Nick, who was also a family man, on the other hand, was often considered a day dreamer. He would look at things and came out with his crazy ideas to make things better, which were mostly scoffed at by no other than his best friend Tim.
As a result, Nick’s work quality deteriorated for being too casual with his job. He complained during a performance appraisal why his ‘focus’ trait plunged down to red, when Tim got much higher rate, endorsed for a promotion, and owned his office room.
One day, on their way back from home, the two saw this awful scene of a dog owner picking up his dog poo, put it in a plastic bag, before disposing it off. They were disgusted with it. A man carrying a dog poo with his hand? That’s absurd.
Then suddenly something struck Nick’s mind. He thought someone who could come up with a product that can get rid of dog’s poo will make a lot of money.
“Hey, you know, if you can create something that can make that dog poo disappear, you can be home free man. Home free.”
As usual, Tim played down the idea. Furthermore, it does not much sense for a dog poo to disappear just like that.”
“How you make dog poo disappear? Where does it go? You can’t just make things.. disappear”. Tim just could not comprehend another of his friend’s crazy solution.
“Well… I don’t know. But I am sure if you can do that you will be rich!”
For days, Nick kept on bugging Tim with his poo idea. He said he was up for something big. He would call Tim late at night and told him the name of his new soon-to-be invention - VaPOOrize. When Nick approached Tim to become his business partner and invest 2000 dollar, Tim profusely rejected. After all, 2000 dollars would take most of his hard earned saving away.
Nick continued experimenting with his idea, and eventually VaPOOrize was invented! It was a spray can that would make dog’s poo (or other pets’) vaporizes into the air. Nick did not even know where exactly the poo went but he knew it solved people’s problem. The night he and his wife saw their invention worked was the night they knew their life was to be changed, forever. Tim and his wife were there too witnessing the occasion, but they would not be any part of Nick’s life changing experience.
True enough, within 3 years, while Tim was stuck with his old job, old car and old house, Nick’s fortune allowed him to built a mansion that came together with a fitness center, bowling alley, golf course, play ground, a go-cart race track and practically everything he and his family wanted. All these were built on their old house area, which was opposite of Nick’s house. And all these came from one thing – poo.
Being a true friend, Nick never forget about his best friend and neighbor, Tim. He bought Tim new clothes, a state-of-the-art coffee machine, wines from newly acquired vineyard and unlimited supply of his invention, VaPOOrize. However, this did not make Tim happy. Day by day, there was this monstrous envy growing inside his head, getting bigger and bigger. So much that it drove him berserk and one day he accidentally burst out with rage at his boss. He was fired the same day.
Crestfallen, he dropped by at a bar and it was during this time he was approached by an off-minded, unemployed drifter, Mr. J-Man who managed to poison Tim’s mind to take things with his own mind and shake things up upon learning about his tale. Tim went home, got himself drunk, consumed with his own envy and the next thing he realized was he accidentally killed Nick’s horse, Corky which was eating apple at his own yard. Left helpless, Tim turned to Mr. J-man who helped hiding the horse’s body.
Next, one thing turned into another. Tim’s family problem, Nick’s grief on losing corky, J-Man’s blackmailing and so on and Tim could no longer take it. In the end, Tim just felt it wasn’t worth it hiding things from Nick and decided to confess everything to Nick. This was done after Nick offered 50% partnership with him. Again, Nick forgave Tim in a true spirit of friendship.
By sheer accident, Corky’s body was found and after a post-mortem, it was found out the horse’s death was due to the chemicals inside the VaPOOrize, which was absorbed by an apple tree. The affected apple eaten by Corky made it suffocate and died, and it wasn’t Tim’s doing that kill it. With the discovery, it was found out that VaPOOrize product is not safe for the environment. It was immediately banned, leaving Nick and Tim back to square one. Nick’s assets and fortunes were put on auction.
To make it short, at the end of the story, Nick’s idea inspired Tim to come out with a new business product. They both became rich again.
Moral of the story? Watch the movie and you will get it, won’t you? Look beyond the jokes and the satires. Surely, it is a an eye opening.
